submitted by pickatmybrain: As you may or may not have heard, the North Carolina state senate voted to repeal a law on Monday that allows death row inmates to argue that racial bias influenced their sentencing. Enacted in 2009, the Racial Justice Act requires judges in North Carolina to commute death row inmates’ sentences to life in prison if they find race played a “significant” role in the initial sentence. This was a very important act that only exists in the state of North Carolina and Kentucky. It is now in the hands of Governor Bev Purdue to finalize the decision. Please email her at email@example.com to veto the repeal. Enough emails can and will make a significant difference on her decision. As little as one sentence or by using this pre-written letter will get her attention. Thank you to anyone who gives their contribution!
newsouth’s note: This is very important. Racial bias/discrimination in sentencing verdicts and in jury selection is a very real thing, and it needs to be kept in check. I think repealing this law is a big step back, y’all. If you don’t agree with repealing the law, get in touch with Governor Perdue; if not, reflect and carry on.
You all know me, I usually don’t ask for people to reblog things but if you could please signal boost this!! This is important!
